I’m just an aspiring fragrance ingredients enthusiast and collector, and I’ve learned to grow accustomed to the notion that some ingredients don’t “smell great,” as though they all could, or should - sometimes, the ingredient is there for the underlying chemistry of a fragrance product in development, and one ingredient can alter the composition in an unexpected manner, rather than that the scents, or the work in progress, would seem to be a sum of it’s constituent parts. That being said, this ingredient, obscure-sounding that it may be, doesn’t disappoint a true fan of the hobby and pursuit of perfume-making, and I actually was kind of hankering for a musty smell, on my own, and I’d say that musty is the feature and characteristic scent of this ingredient.

I was initially sold on the “patchouli” statement on the product’s description, and I’m trying to play into the folklore of that a classic patchouli is something that improves, with age, so I’m working at developing that specialty, over time. Overall, not a bad ingredient, particularly for the kind of fragrance enthusiast that doesn’t mind getting their hands (nose) dirty, so to speak. It’s definitely one for study, I’d say, prior to incorporating it in to a composition.
